Lions Club of Reading held its annual Charity Golf Day at Reading Golf Club on September 3rd 2010; raising much needed funds for the Lion & Dolphin wards at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. These wards are dedicated to children and we were raising money to purchase pop up beds enabling parents to be with their children during their hospital stay. Thanks to everyone's efforts we will be able to send £600 to the ward.
"You should have gone to Specsavers" may not have been what golfers expected to hear when they finally holed the ball at the Golf Day but golf holes that answered back was exactly what they got! The "Talking Golf Hole" is an electronic device that sits in the golf hole and is triggered by the ball dropping in.
The "voice" as it became known by our golfers, had recorded a message on the device, on some holes which either alerted the team to a "Nearest the Pin" or "Straightest Drive" competition on the next hole - for which a prize would be won. On the following hole, the "voice" asked a quiz question. A prize was awarded to the team with the most correct answers in the quiz.
Back at the clubhouse, there was banter from incoming teams and golf club members concerning the quiz answers as well as a fascination for the Talking Golf Hole.
Our sponsors also used the device to record their company's marketing message to raise brand awareness. It's a more dynamic and effective marketing technique than simply placing a corporate banner or display at their sponsored hole.
