Prostate Awareness Evening - Sponsorship needed
- Prostate cancer is the most common form of male cancer in the UK
- Each year more than 35,000 men are diagnosed and more than 10,000 die from the disease
- Men over 50 may develop early prostate cancer that is still at the curable stage
- A simple blood test may indicate the signs of early changes.
There is no national screening programme for the disease and we are advised that the test is not normally available on the NHS unless symptoms are displayed. That is why the Lions Club of Reading held a prostate cancer awareness evening, the first we believe in the Reading area. Our aim is to make the local community aware of the disease and to offer free prostate screening tests on the night.
We are working with Consultant Urological Surgeon Mr David Baxter - Smith, who gave several short presentations about prostate cancer on the evening and answered questions raised from the floor. A small blood sample was taken by trained phlebotomists from those participating. The blood samples were then to a specialist laboratory overnight and the results will be conveyed directly to each individual by Dr Baxter- Smith.
The cost of holding an evening of this type is approximately £8,000, largely due to the cost of the laboratory analysis (based on 400 tests @ £20.00 per person). We are hoping to hold another evening in the future and will be seeking support from sponsors to help offset some of our costs. If you think you can help please complete and return one of the attached sponsor forms.
